What Itara is: a Garifuna language and culture platform built with the community of Hopkins Village, Belize. It teaches the language through a free phrasebook with audio, a living dictionary, a daily word, an AI teacher for conversation practice, a pronunciation studio, and archive film and stories from the coast.

Who it is for: Garifuna families keeping the language at home, diaspora learners reconnecting with it, teachers and students who need a reliable reference, and anyone curious about Garifuna history and culture. Itara also publishes practical home-repair guidance under the same roof — separate from the cultural work, and never mixed into it.

Origins
From Yurumein to the Caribbean coast
After exile from St. Vincent in 1797, the Garifuna people landed in Roatán and spread along the Central American coast — keeping language, ritual, and rhythm intact.
Settlement
Hopkins — a village built on saltwater and song
Founded after Newtown was destroyed by a 1937 hurricane, Hopkins became one of the most concentrated Garifuna communities in the world.
Language
A living Arawakan-Carib voice
Garifuna is UNESCO-recognized as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity — spoken daily, sung nightly.
Music
Punta, paranda, and the primero drum
The primero leads, the segunda holds. Together they call ancestors into the room — and the diaspora back home.
